I finished listening to Lucy Christopher’s Stolen today on my way into work.
It was a bittersweet ending for me. Actually, the whole book felt that way.
A young girl is, as the title eerily states, stolen from her family and taken far away. Really far…we’re talking to Australia far.
The whole idea terrified me. Thinking of being in an airport (I travel quite a bit) with family one minute and drugged and stolen the next…OMG! That totally freaks me out. The simplicity of the act really scared me.
I talked about this for days and had to stop reading before bed one night. Schmoopy was not happy that I got myself into such a tizzy right before bed. I switched to the audio book so I could keep reading!
How AWESOME is it when a book can do this?!?!?!?
Pretty freaking awesome-that’s how awesome!
Stolen really grabbed me (dare I say my thoughts were stolen by this book…maybe my sense of security was stolen…ok, I’ll quit!) right from the start. It was so REAL! It could happen, just like that. You, me, anyone. So easily and seemingly effortlessly (even though it was planned out quite carefully by Ty). Gemma was with her family in an airport, in a coffee shop, drugged, then just taken. UGH!
The story is told by Gemma as a letter to her kidnapper, Ty. We get that firsthand knowledge of Gemma’s thoughts of her capture. All of Gemma’s fears so vivid & realistic! It is really creepy. But, at the same time, you feel compassion for Ty. I think that was part of what raised the creepy factor of this book for me. I kept thinking: OMG, OMG, OMG!
I don’t want to give the story away. Plus, I would not be able to do Lucy Christopher’s writing justice! It is just a must read book!
Have you read Stolen? If so, I’d love to know your thoughts!
If not, go for it-but only during the day in a super safe place if the thought of being stolen really freaks you out!
