Amped by Daniel H. Wilson

I loved Robopocalypse! LOVED IT! I know, I’ve mentioned that a few times, but it is freaking awesome.

Amped, Daniel H. Wilson’s latest, was just as freaking epic! It started at full speed & kept up the pace throughout. Tons of action, thought provoking issues, and classic Wilson style. Basically, tons of win from page one until the end.

I still need some time to process my thoughts (because I’m not an Amp), but it can tell you it hit close to my heart & will live in my thoughts for a long time.

Confessions of a Bad Blogger!

So, I’m going to admit it. I’ve been a bad blogger lately. No excuses. Really. I’m going to own this one 100%!

But, I haven’t just been lying around doing nothing all day & night. I’m not that horrible!

Here’s are a few pics of what I’ve been doing. Full update soon, for real life!

Tonight I went to Georgia Center for the Book with my awesome friend Jessica to see Sam Bracken & Echo Garrett talk about the awesome book about Sam’s life called My Orange Duffel Bag. They were both AMAZING!
I’m going to write more about this book soon, but needed it to be on your book love list immediately. This is a life changer!

Amped Bling! Daniel H. Wilson ROCKS!

Daniel H. Wilson is freaking awesome!

I loved Robopocalypse! Totally loved it. It scared the heck out of me, but in an awesome way! I also loved How to Survive a Robot Uprising! I even used it with my 8th graders this year. They loved it, too! (I would have used Robopocalypse, but there were too many F-bombs for school!).

So, when I heard Daniel H. Wilson had a new book coming out, I pre-ordered it immediately! Got AMPED today and cannot wait to read it!

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Never Let Me Go Gets 4 Blings!

Wow!

Never Let Me Go is a simple story, yet so complex. There isn’t much I can say without giving away important information about the plot.

I will say that the story of Hailsham students sounds so calm and beautiful, but quickly begins to hint that all is not quite right in this tranquil setting.

It is a beautiful story. I think I will find myself thinking of it often. A story that that at feels effortless yet intricate at once. It is told in a gentle rhythm, and it left me in a state of awe.

Also, did not know this was a movie. I’m trying to decide if I want to watch it or not.

Have you read Never Let Me Go? Seen the movie? I’d love your thoughts!

Touring Chicago Merit Style with a little help from Chloe Neill!

Schmoopy and I are in Chicago for the International Reading Association convention. It starts on Monday, so today we had some tourist time!

We  got to spend the day doing some sightseeing.

Of course, I needed to see where Merit, from the awesome Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampire series, lives.

I sent a little Tweet out to Chloe Neill asking for some pointers on Cadogan House and she totally replied!

Massive FANGIRLING episode ensued!

So, Schmoopy and I hit up the local Starbucks and started walking. 2.1 miles (Yup, miles were walked. That’s serious!!) later, we were there. We stopped along the way to do some super fun touristy stuff that I’ll post later, but my goal was Cadogan all the way.

Cadogan House

Unfortunately, it was daylight, so Merit was sleeping. They say it is the US Soccer House, nice cover, but I know the truth.

Then, to take my FanGirl’s Guide to Chicago a step further, Chloe Neill asked me if she could post my picture (my. freaking. picture!) on her blog. What the what? Can you say YES any faster than I did?

Check it out here:

So, my day was EPIC! Totally, vampirely, wickedly, awesomely, EPIC!

1Q84-Really Awesome! Really Long!

1Q84

I’ve been wanted to read 1Q84 for a while, but there are so many awesome books out there that I couldn’t commit to such a long read (it is actually 3 books in one).

I put my name on the waiting list for the audio books at the library and just figured I’d see how I felt when my turn came around. I picked up the giant double pack of discs, 38 in all, on the same day that I finished listening to Fahrenheit 451. I figured I’d give it a try and just return it if it wasn’t for me. Especailly after such an awesome audio (I actually missed my turn last week because I was so into Fahrenheit 451 & I’m still getting teased about it!).

It didn’t even take a full disc to hook me! This book is amazing!  I love it so much. And I’m already on the 4th cd.The story is so intriguing. Here’s what GoodReads has to say about it:

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver’s enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 —“Q is for ‘question mark.’ A world that bears a question.” Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame’s and Tengo’s narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell’s—1Q84 is Haruki Murakami’s most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

Have you read 1Q84? If so, what did you think? If not, do you think you might give it a try?

In 2012, my goal will be 112 books.

With this in mind, I am going to pledge to read at the Nirvana Level of the Speculative Fiction Challenge. This is 24 novels. I have a feeling that I will probably end up in the Obsessed range (48 Speculative Fiction novels).

Sookie & DEAD RECKONING get 4 Blings!

4 Bling Book!

I usually don’t read reviews of books. I just read what I like or what a friend (or awesome blogger) recommends. But, for some reason, I read a few reviews of DEAD RECKONING and they were awful. So, of course, I had to read more reviews. I was pretty shocked at how negative they were. I mean, this is like the 11th book in the series, they knew what they were getting into.

I thought the book was Sookie being Sookie, vampires being vampy, and everybody else doing what they usually do in this awesome Charlaine Harris series. The only thing I really (REALLY) noticed was the lack of explicit bedroom scenes. There was a pretty heavy one on the porch, but that was it. And let me tell you, that was quite fine with me. Didn’t really miss it. I always look around like a guilty kid when I read those hot and heavy scenes, like I’m about to get caught doing something really awful, anyway. So, aside from that, I still don’t see what the big fuss is all about.

Several reviews stated that not much happened in this novel. I thought the amount of action was on point for the Sookie series. But, I also think that DEAD RECKONING was a “bridge book” of sorts. By that I mean that it was needed to act as a bridge between the book before it and the book after it. I mean, really, Charlaine Harris knows what she’s doing with this series, so I trust her on stuff like this. Every major series has a few “bridge books” in their lineup. It just has to happen sometimes.

Another common comment that I read was that there were several inconsistencies in the plot. They named details that, quite frankly, weren’t ones that stood out to me or even mattered once they were pointed out. I kinda wanted to tell those guys to chill the heck out. It is a super fun and trashy vampire series for heaven’s sake. It’s not going into the cannon! Geez! But, I can see why those super obsessed fans would like to point out stuff like that. I do know many a fan of other things (cough, cough, Star Wars, cough, cough, my Schmoopy) that would be able to rattle off any slight inconsistency ever in any related material. I get it, but really. Calm down. It’s not a deal breaker to me.

All that being said, I enjoyed the book. It was fun and had a bit of mystery. The plot made sense to me and everyone I wanted to hear about was there. I still don’t totally get Eric and Sookie’s relationship. I mean, he is way hotter and way less caring than she is. Even though I think he is way hotter than Bill (bad boy complex, I know, I know), I just don’t see them together for long haul-not that they could be anyway, since she has no interest in being a vampire.  But, maybe we’ll see a Sookie and Bill, Sookie and Sam, Sookie and somebody that she can have a happily human ever after with relationship soon. Maybe.

What can I say. I’m a fan and I look forward to the next in the series, the new story collection  HOME IMPROVEMENT: DEAD EDITION by some of my favorite authors of all things supernatural & the SOOKIE STACKHOUSE COMPANION, both due out in August, 2011.  I’m counting down the days until the new season of TRUE BLOOD on June 26, too. I am so totally crushing on that Eric’s vampire hotness! Uh-huh!
