5 Blings for Nerd Girls by Alan Lawrence Sitomer!

5 Blings for Nerd Girls!

Alan Lawrence Sitomer really gets it!  I’ve love all of his books. THE SECRET STORY OF SONIA RODRIGUEZ is a favorite, but I really do like them all.

NERD GIRLS: THE RISE OF THE DORKASAURUS is a different kind of Sitomer book. There are so many things I like about this book! It is really funny, without trying too hard or feeling fake. It is empowering without being super preachy or judgemental. And, maybe most of all, it is filled with characters that are real–the kind you really love or hate once you get to know them.

First of all, we have our Nerd Girls. Big-boned and food obsessed Maureen (Mo), our narrator, is the overweight middle child of her family. Her brother, Marty, is a prankster and her younger sister, Ashley, is a totally popular gymnast. There’s Allergy Alice Applebee (nicknamed Q for questions mark because she always makes you wonder). She is allergic to everything. Really. Everything! She is constantly puffing on her inhaler with a hysterical “Wheeesh-Whooosh!” Finally there is Beanpole Barbara, the clumsiest girl in the history of the world. She constantly trips, falls, and crashes into everything and anything around her. After the “Ouch!” you hear an immediate, “I’m okay, I’m okay!” She is a mess! All the Nerd Girls are a mess, really.

Of course, we meet the ThreePees: aka Brattany (Brittany), Sophie (Sophes), and Kiki. They are the  horrid, typical middle school Mean Girls. The P’s are for Pretty, Popular, and Perfect. They make boys swoon, treat girls like trash, and make the lives of nerd unbearable.

And of course, there is that boy: Logan Meyers. Maureen totally crushes on him and he is always around when she is doing something super dorky and embarrassing!

So, what’s so great about this book? Well, as I pointed out earlier, it is funny. Poor Big-Boned-Maureen tries to do the right thing, makes a fool of herself, and it gets plastered on YouTube. It is that kind of horrible, Oh-My-Gosh-I’m-So-Glad-That-Didn’t-Happen-To-Me kind of thing that keeps you up at night. It is also hysterical because it wasn’t me! Also, it is the kind of story that you can put yourself right in the middle of. Especially in our horrid middle school days. These three nerdy girls are brought together through necessity and the need for the kind of revenge that also screams for justice (another cool theme that runs through the book). A great friendship forms. You root for them. You want them to win. You feel their pain.

I don’t want to give away too much. There’s a terrible act of mean, a revenge plan involving a talent show, and a ton of laughs, Wheeesh-Whooosh-es, I’m Okay-s, and sneaky junk food from Paradise Palace. There’s even a robotic dog that pees. What’s not to like?

I will promise you that if you don’t like Nerd Girls, you are probably more of a ThreePees kinda girl. And, even if you were, you would be lying if you said you were never the victim of some kind mean girl type antics. Even ThreePees get treated poorly be other ThreePees.

In the end, what needs to happen happens. It isn’t one of those super cheesy happily ever after deals, either. It is what should happen and what really could happen. And, best of all, I’m totally rooting for a “Return of the Nerd Girls” type sequel to be in the works!

Read it, you’ll love it, all 5 Blings of it!

Even the CDC is ready for the Zombie Apocalypse!

Surviving the Zombies! from CDC, see link to article

I read this last night on a super cool iPad app called Zite. It builds a personal magazine for you based on what you like and what you don’t. My love for all things supernatural and strange was quickly picked up by this super cool and freaky big brother type app. If you’ve got an iPad, you need Zite!

Now, on to the Zombies…

I’m sure that the CDC posted this as a humorous way to get people prepared for any kind of disaster, but with all the zombie, post-apocalyptic, and dystopia I’ve been reading lately, it didn’t seem that way at first. And  with the supposed end of the world thing hitting on Saturday, May 21, I have to wonder how many people saw this and really freaked out. BTW, if you’d like to leave  me your cash, your car, or anything valuable before the end hits, just give me a call!

I thought this was both awesome and hysterical. So, I wanted you to read it, too!

Sookie & DEAD RECKONING get 4 Blings!

4 Bling Book!

I usually don’t read reviews of books. I just read what I like or what a friend (or awesome blogger) recommends. But, for some reason, I read a few reviews of DEAD RECKONING and they were awful. So, of course, I had to read more reviews. I was pretty shocked at how negative they were. I mean, this is like the 11th book in the series, they knew what they were getting into.

I thought the book was Sookie being Sookie, vampires being vampy, and everybody else doing what they usually do in this awesome Charlaine Harris series. The only thing I really (REALLY) noticed was the lack of explicit bedroom scenes. There was a pretty heavy one on the porch, but that was it. And let me tell you, that was quite fine with me. Didn’t really miss it. I always look around like a guilty kid when I read those hot and heavy scenes, like I’m about to get caught doing something really awful, anyway. So, aside from that, I still don’t see what the big fuss is all about.

Several reviews stated that not much happened in this novel. I thought the amount of action was on point for the Sookie series. But, I also think that DEAD RECKONING was a “bridge book” of sorts. By that I mean that it was needed to act as a bridge between the book before it and the book after it. I mean, really, Charlaine Harris knows what she’s doing with this series, so I trust her on stuff like this. Every major series has a few “bridge books” in their lineup. It just has to happen sometimes.

Another common comment that I read was that there were several inconsistencies in the plot. They named details that, quite frankly, weren’t ones that stood out to me or even mattered once they were pointed out. I kinda wanted to tell those guys to chill the heck out. It is a super fun and trashy vampire series for heaven’s sake. It’s not going into the cannon! Geez! But, I can see why those super obsessed fans would like to point out stuff like that. I do know many a fan of other things (cough, cough, Star Wars, cough, cough, my Schmoopy) that would be able to rattle off any slight inconsistency ever in any related material. I get it, but really. Calm down. It’s not a deal breaker to me.

All that being said, I enjoyed the book. It was fun and had a bit of mystery. The plot made sense to me and everyone I wanted to hear about was there. I still don’t totally get Eric and Sookie’s relationship. I mean, he is way hotter and way less caring than she is. Even though I think he is way hotter than Bill (bad boy complex, I know, I know), I just don’t see them together for long haul-not that they could be anyway, since she has no interest in being a vampire.  But, maybe we’ll see a Sookie and Bill, Sookie and Sam, Sookie and somebody that she can have a happily human ever after with relationship soon. Maybe.

What can I say. I’m a fan and I look forward to the next in the series, the new story collection  HOME IMPROVEMENT: DEAD EDITION by some of my favorite authors of all things supernatural & the SOOKIE STACKHOUSE COMPANION, both due out in August, 2011.  I’m counting down the days until the new season of TRUE BLOOD on June 26, too. I am so totally crushing on that Eric’s vampire hotness! Uh-huh!

Finally Reading (Don’t Judge Me!)

I hate to admit this, but I’ve never read the MORTAL INSTRUMENTS series by Cassandra Clare.

How is this possible? I know, right! I don’t know either!

Well, I’m taking care of that right now. I’ve checked out the audio books from the library (YAY Libraries!) and I’m listening to them in my car.  I’m always in need of a reason to look forward to my long commute, so I’m quite picky about the books I listen to in the car. I just started this morning and I’m already so intrigued.

Mortal Instruments City of Bones

Sookie & Eric, Claire & Shane!

So in love with these sexy vampires (Eric!) & humans (Shane!) that I just can’t stop reading.
And I just can’t wait for Merit & Ethan!
Yup, I have vampire issues.
Don’t like it?

Reading Right Now

I had to make some tough vampire choices this week. I decided on DEAD RECKONING by Charlaine Harris, mainly because I had it on my iPad. I preordered BITE CLUB by Rachel Caine and HARD BITTEN by Chloe Neill before I knew about the awesome iPad anniversary gift that Schmoopy gave me! Truth be told, they’ve been preordered for months. I really super totally love this iPad, so it made the choice really easy! Yup, this post is From my iPad, too! (so be extra understanding about spelling oops, ok.)!

But here’s the kicker…I have a major rule about no technology in bed (mainly because I have zero self control with my iPhone and laptop), so I am still trying to decide where the iPad falls under this rule. If I just read, I would be ok, but again the lack of self control thing comes into play! So, I came up with a great solution: I’m reading Sookie on the iPad downstairs and Morganville upstairs. If only I could fit Chicagoland in there without totally mixing up my vampires!

Oh well, you can’t have everything!

Update: I totally stalked Cadogan House when I visited Chicago in 2012. Schmoopy knew he was powerless to resist my need to find Merit and Eric. It was pretty dang epic! Sadly, it was during the day and they weren’t available. Maybe next time!

iPad Weekend & The Dark Side!

Schmoopy got me an iPad for our anniversary & it finally arrived on Thursday night. I have spent most of the weekend playing with it. I’m writing this post on it now!

I totally love it! Love, love, love it!

There is, however, a dark side to this awesome iPad! Yep, really, there is. I haven’t read as much as I usually do & I’ve had to tear myself away from it several times to get things done. I hated to leave it when we went out & I’m already worried about missing it when I go to work tomorrow (kidding-kinda!). But really, I might need an iPad intervention soon. Uh-oh!

I’d love to hear from you about the best apps and how you use your iPad & maybe a tip or two about how to return from The Dark Side!

Sent from Mandee’s iPad!

Review: Because I am Furniture

Because I am FurnitureBecause I am Furniture by Thalia Chaltas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Since it is National Poetry Month, I think Because I am Furniture by Thalia Chaltas deserves a Shout-Out!

I ran across this book at the library a few months ago, read it in one evening (devoured it, really) and it has been on my mind ever since. Written in verse, it tells the story of a girl named Anke who isn’t being abused by dad, even though everyone else is. She grows stronger and stronger, both physically and emotionally, after making the volleyball team. All of the yelling of “Mine!” in the sport lead Anke to finally defend herself and her family from her abusive dad.

This book is amazing and totally earns all 5 of its Blings!
